Advice from others  Although some advice I’ve discovered isn’t helpful due to generational differences, some tips I’ve acquired have been particularly helpful.  Firstly, if you’re unsure on your career path, or where to start, the National Careers Service has some helpful information as long as advertisements for some apprenticeships. I spoke to a careers advisor who talked me through my CV and helped me with some key tips: - Keep it short and sweet- no more than two pages. -Ensure when handing it over to an employer it is Word or PDF format -Employment history must be in chronological order with your latest job at the top -No personal information such as address/telephone number These are some short tips to bare in mind- however overall I’ve learnt to write punctually and to lack detail. Write down basic employment history and skills acquired, as well as noting your IT literacy as this was something I nearly forgot! If you have time, speak to an advisor as they can give you h...

Preparing for “The Real World ” During sixth form and secondary school, I received lots of helpful information and advice deciding on my future. However, most advice were for those choosing University. There was new information such as finances and accommodation for them to learn about, but this left those unsure about their career path in the dark. University was pressed onto us as the right decision to make, although it isn’t for everybody. I struggled deciding where my future will lead, so University was not an option when you aren’t sure which degree to choose.  So, I left sixth form unsure of my career path, feeling unprepared. Once I had decided on the television industry as my chosen career path, I thought I’d feel relief. But, I was still left blind.  Without the connections and help of teachers and advisors, where do you kickstart your career? The one thing school did not prepare me for, is the isolation you feel when you have nobody to talk to after years of advisors...

The Struggles of Young Adults entering the Media Industry  After leaving sixth form, I completed my A-Levels and was left deciding what path I wanted to take in my future career. Looking around me, my peers had their future decided and their Universities/Apprenticeships selected, whilst I was still stuck in a spiral of decisions I need to make. When I brought up my concerns to teachers/parents, I would be fed back with the reply,  “Don’t worry, you’ve got time.” This didn’t give me the immediate calming affect which was intended. In my eyes, this added to my worries. Having time helps, but thoughts of wasting it was added stress. Eventually, after weighing up my strengths and interests, I finally made my decision. I’ve always been interested in writing and entertainment, so pursuing a career in these strengths would be ideal as well as enjoyable. This led me to the idea of production. I watch television day to day, but I also write my own ideas and short plots in my spar...

About me My name is Maisie O’Neill and I am 18 years old seeking opportunities into the Media industry. Last year, I completed A-Levels of Biology, Chemistry and English. Now, I’m working towards my dream career where I can use my writing, which would be journalism or production.  So far, I have found difficulties in finding roles for entry-level applicants, as they require experience. Although apprenticeships are available, however not many, so few are successful.  My interests  On the side, I enjoy writing either creative stories/plots or factual essays. Comparing novels has always been an interest of mine, researching context and using extensive analysis. I find myself writing from my own creative ideas often, whether that be novel ideas or plots for films. As well as this, I am a sociable and outgoing individual who enjoys seeing friends and family. I would love to use my interests and skills in a future career, so a creative and sociable industry like media wo...
